Rusted Rhythms Vol. 36 - Chalky
For the 36th edition of Rusted Rhythms, we're extremely excited to host an hour long set, featuring a slew of unreleased originals and collaborative tracks amidst some notable fan favorites. From his own sultry guitar lines, to Seppa's braying saxophone leads, to Alicia Kiah's violin harmonies, the journey plays out like an intentional composition from start to finish, showcasing every strength of the Chalky catalog with an equal hand.
Chalky has spent the last two years voraciously picking up steam, releasing multiple collaborative albums with Slug Wife's Seppa (including the recently released "Strange Changes"), choice selections of individual works, and contributing a smashing performance for Volume 3 of the Featherbed Sessions. His signature blend of jazz, neo-soul, hip-hop, and peculiar sound design has a way of capturing the attention in a vice-grip; there are few occasions where his music won't slide right into the vibe like a skeleton key, and it's that undeniable vibe interpolation that makes Chalky's music so strikingly sensuous.

Rusted Rhythms Vol. 31 - Kodiak Kid
Born from his passion for turntablism and the art of DJing, Kodiak Kid’s sophisticated mixing skills and bold track selection are impossible to miss for the discerning listener. He tosses any style of music into his mixes, from reggae and hip-hop to mid-tempo, glitch, drum and bass and downtempo. On Rusted Rhythms Vol. 31, he mostly favors hip-hop, halftime bass, and the hard-hitting intersection between these two styles. It’s full of raw and highly relatable bars from a number of international emcees which then segue into alien bass frequencies.
Rusted Rhythms Vol. 31 comes all the way from down under in Melbourne, Australia courtesy of Kodiak Kid, a well-traveled DJ who is set to release his debut EP Drifting Status May 10. Although he’s never released original music - besides “To the Point”, the first single from the upcoming EP - Kodiak Kid’s reputation in the worldwide bass community is strong and getting stronger. The reason for this is two-fold. First, after coming into contact with many of the world’s best bass producers through his festival plays (Burning Man, Rainbow Serpent, Earth Frequency) and his role managing the Melbourne-based events company Whomp Music, folks have nothing but good things to say about him. Second, he consistently releases his DJ sets from these festivals, treating online audiences to several journeys down the rabbit hole.

Rusted Rhythms Vol. 30 - Mike Wallis
United Kingdom native Mike Wallis is best known as one half of Crunch with Tipper and one third of the rowdy, hip-hop heavy K.L.O project. During more than two-decades moving through the back streets of electronica, Wallis has released under “10 or 11” monikers. He also co-manages Colony Productions, an imprint that curates some of the world’s most prolific downtempo and glitch music. For this special thirtieth edition of Rusted Rhythms, Mike has prepared a “Colonization Mix”, one hour of selections from the Colony Productions catalog, spanning from 2001 to the present day.
United Kingdom native Mike Wallis is best known as one half of Crunch with Tipper and one third of the rowdy, hip-hop heavy K.L.O project, where he performs as Osmetic with Kursa & Lone Drum. During more than two-decades moving through the back streets of electronica, Wallis has released under “10 or 11” monikers and collaborated with dozens of producers. He also co-manages Colony Productions, an imprint that curates some of the world’s most prolific downtempo and glitch music from producers such as Vent, Kursa, Opiuo, Bogtrotter, and Dreamwalker.
Wallis began DJing at 15 years old and began producing at 18 in 1994. After releasing music as PSI SPY and Abstrakt Knights, a collaborative project with Sam Ashwell, he founded Colony Productions in 2001. Ashwell (a member of Vent) would join Mike in 2005 to co-manage the label. Primarily, Colony was created as a platform to release some of the first work from Crunch, a collaborative project with Mike’s childhood friend Dave Tipper. The minimal, textured and ambient Crunch sound served as a foundation for Colony. Over time, though the label came to embrace a broad spectrum of exploratory electronic music ranging from heavy and deranged to soft and blissful.
For this special thirtieth edition of Rusted Rhythms, this pioneer in broken beat electronica has prepared a “Colonization Mix”, one hour of selections from the Colony Productions catalog, spanning from 2001 to the present day. Colony has always been ahead of the curve, releasing work from Kursa and Duskky (now Seppa) in 2015, for example. From his lofty perch directing this label, and as a collaborator with some of electronic music’s most influential producers, Mike has been well-situated to witness the evolution of glitch-based music. By touring us through the Colony catalog in RR30, he enables listeners to bear witness to this evolution, too.
This mix also features a companion interview published in our Blog, where Mike discusses his musical journey and his first release as Osmetic, Lab Notes. This all comes ahead of Elements Lakewood Camping Festival on Memorial Day Weekend in Lakewood, Pennsylvania, where Mike Wallis will headline The Rust Music’s late night stage takeover (tickets).

Rusted Rhythms Vol. 27 - pheel.
More so than in past iterations of his music, pheel’s contribution to Rusted Rhythms finds him playing with and leveraging the force of sub-bass. It’s a subtle force, as these things usually are with pheel. It’s in the nuance, the detail, and even at times in the silence that this producer truly speaks. This mix consists of all original music, runs for approximately one hour, and builds ever so gradually from beginning to end.
pheel. walks the line between hip-hop and electronic music with uncommon grace. It’s a thin and blurry line, for sure, but the New York-bred and Denver-based producer walks it like a tightrope. Rusted Rhythms Vol. 25 - Face Plant
For the 25th edition of Rusted Rhythms, The Rust Music's resident Face Plant is channeling his ghoulish musings through the veil of Halloween. Jason Shepherd, the man behind the alias, is already noted for his penchant for all things spooky and far out. Elaborating on that supernatural infatuation, the tracklist for this mix is the ideal soundscape for All Hallow's Eve.

Jason Shepherd, the man behind the alias, is already noted for his penchant for all things spooky and far out. Elaborating on that supernatural infatuation, the tracklist for this mix is the ideal soundscape for All Hallow's Eve. Anchored throughout the mix are a slew of unreleased Face Plant goodies, showcasing his palette of nuclear-charged synthesis and generative sound design. Fat wobbles don't go out of style; they simply adapt, evolve, and become fatter wobbles, and Shepherd lives by this platitude. Beyond the Face Plant originals, the mix is littered with selectors from some of the more prolific names in electronically produced music, most notably Mr. Bill, Alon Mor, Culprate, and Ion Driver. Tapping from the well of hip-hop and it's pervasive spin-offs, the likes of Gramatik, Tab & Anitek, and Rasp 5 find their homes in this edition of Rusted Rhythms as well, complimenting what is already a hip-hop rhythmic focus. If you're trying to get alchemical this Halloween, here's your soundtrack. The witch's brew is stirred properly, the moon is radiating it's lurid glow, and Halloween is finally upon us. Stay spooky.

Sam Whittingham (Sortof Vague), the man behind the decks, is a Colorado native with a keen ear for musical atmospheres. Vince Santora (Vinja), commanding the turntables, is a veteran rhythm curator. Together, their talents align into a mutagenic 45-minute melee. Weaving through drum and bass, half-time, and neuro formats, this mix is an appeal to the adrenaline junkie. The mixing itself is an art to behold. Each successive track and transition compliments not just the track it overtakes, but the sum of the extended musical journey. Honing in especially on bone-crushing bass lines, the tracklist features a brutal collaboration between Sortof Vague and Vinja, as well as cuts from NOISIA, DJ Madd, Metafloor, Detox Unit, and a host of other producers dug out from the deep wells of bass music. If you enjoy hearing cerebral soundmen slice sub-woofers in half, then you’ve surely found your next soundtrack with Rusted Rhythms Vol. 23.

Rusted Rhythms Vol. 19 - LOVEY
Rusted Rhythms is back with a well-blended collection of wild-eyed tunes from Israeli DJ LOVEY.
Rusted Rhythms is back with a well-blended collection of wild-eyed tunes from Israeli DJ LOVEY. This outlandish selection of tracks runs the gambit of emotions, at times manic and later soothing. The atmosphere is atypical, and the different textures and sounds would be difficult to juxtapose were it not for the creative mixing and selection of LOVEY. Dark and not altogether electronic vibes from the likes of Alon Mor and Fine Cut Bodies leer in the shadows, giving way only occasionally to more conventional beats. It's a great selection of sounds to safely lose your mind to, if only for an hour.

Broadcasting from the holler of Asheville, North Carolina, Ryan Laffler aka Soul Candy offers an omnivorous exploration of broken beat. This mix moves through glitch, hip-hop, British breaks and back again, with brief downtempo respites to help listeners catch their breath. These rhythms include old school hip-hop throwbacks, deep selections from names both legendary and unknown, and weighty cuts from the cream of the contemporary glitch crop; Kursa, Seppa, Detox Unit, Monuman and K.LO. It’s all sewn together through an aggressive mixing style - Soul Candy takes risks when splicing together tunes, creating those one-of-a-kind musical spaces that make a mix memorable.

We won’t reveal too much, as the mix speaks for itself, but it is an impeccable journey through an extensive range of styles and feels, each with a World music influence like much of griff's own productions.

Just in time for Spring we've got a brand new edition of Rusted Rhythms. Volume six of our mix series features an hour of smooth and savory tunes from MALAKAI. Predominantly featuring originals, with a few remixes and tracks from other artists, the mix is a colorful blend of chilled out head-nod music and glitch-infested exuberance. Perfect for a day in the sun, but somehow also well-suited for relaxing inside, escaping the rain. It's also just as comfortable as a dancefloor selection. The key component here is groove - the artist sews the seams of each song succinctly, and the head nod is consistent. That's something I know I look for in a mix. I've said enough - I'll let the mix do the talking.

Just in time for this year's first real snow, we have Face Plant's "Aquarius" mix, inspired by the dichotomous nature of winter - the bone-chilling bittersweet serenity of the season.
The calm before the storm...
Just in time for this year's first real snow, we have Face Plant's "Aquarius" mix, inspired by the dichotomous nature of winter - the bone-chilling bittersweet serenity of the season. The careful tranquility of the snow versus the vicious briskness. This hour long mix includes unreleased originals from the producer, as well as a host of tunes from an eclectic range of other artists.

Incredibly hyped to announce Rusted Rhythms Vol. 2, which features a new mix from Foxtail. An incredibly diverse blend of downtempo, IDM, glitch, psychedelic bass, ambient... the list goes on. This mix is a mysterious journey into the mind of the vulpine soundsifter, littered with obscure, thought-provoking samples, eerily vast soundscapes, and some of the squelchiest gurgles to ever bless the airwaves.

Beyond excited to announce the first volume of our new mix series, "Rusted Rhythms." This mix is the first of many, and features Fractal Dragon, an incredibly talented producer from Santa Cruz, California. If you like mesmerizingly strange psychedelic bass music than this mix is most certainly for you. His most recent project, "Dream Face," was released August 29th, and is available now on his Bandcamp.
