Running the decks for the next installation of our Rusted Rhythms series is Benny Fishel, the musical alias of Joseph Lee Shellaberger Jr. He is the owner of Subworld Audio, a North Carolina-based label that specializes in dubstep and other formats of system music. Subworld has been steadily releasing an assortment of sub-focused tunes from an absurdly diverse cast of producers, many of which are undiscovered. With this ethos it's only right that we hollered at Benny Fishel for a Rusted Rhythms.
Rinsing out original tunes, as well as tracks from Thelem, The Widdler, and Pushloop, Benny Fishel hones in on some serious bassweight throughout the duration of the mix. There's also a few Subworld tunes thrown into the mix for the heads. If all things 140bpm are your thing, then be sure to dive in with headroom to spare.

Dripping with low-end goodness, the entire aural experience is comprised almost entirely of unreleased music. Sprawling across varying tempos and stylistic influences, the flow from track to track within the mix is without fanfare; no hard stops, no fancy parlor tricks. Sharp musical turnarounds and in-the-pocket transitions swing from reggae-inspired cuts to voluminous basslines. A careful balance between daylight jams and midnight neckbreakers keeps the sonic journey from becoming stagnant. Ultimately, the mix allows some insight into the varying influences that Templo receives his eclectic palette from.

This summer the crew is shredding tiny clubs and big festivals on its fourth North American tour. To celebrate, Kursk whipped up a premium guest mix for The Rusted Rhythms series. It exemplifies his ability to flawlessly mix amazing, obscure dubs (no tracklist), and highlights the sound that Innamind pushes; a 140 bpm blend rooted in all the best aspects of traditional dubstep but not afraid to make huge departures from the familiar.

Rusted Rhythms is back with a well-blended collection of wild-eyed tunes from Israeli DJ LOVEY. This outlandish selection of tracks runs the gambit of emotions, at times manic and later soothing. The atmosphere is atypical, and the different textures and sounds would be difficult to juxtapose were it not for the creative mixing and selection of LOVEY. Dark and not altogether electronic vibes from the likes of Alon Mor and Fine Cut Bodies leer in the shadows, giving way only occasionally to more conventional beats. It's a great selection of sounds to safely lose your mind to, if only for an hour.

Jason Burruss has been a linchpin in the bass music community in both California and Colorado for years. Whether it be constructing intricate DJ sets using an incredible breadth of genres moods and tempos, curating innovative events with his production company, Purple Couch, or creating custom jewelry, Jason Burruss is a seemingly ubiquitous lifeform, popping up and creating something interesting wherever he finds himself. He has an ostensibly intrinsic ability to adapt to his environment. In preparation for this mix the artist explored our collective's music taste, and constructed a narrative that suits both our ethos and listener's sonic preference.

We are incredibly excited to present a mix from Primate, a UK native with a penchant for all things percussive. Primate has established himself as voyager of modern electronic music, and co-curates his own eclectic label, SmallPrint Recordings. We are honored to announce that in addition to entering the Rusted Rhythms catalog, Primate will also join The Rust Music’s roster as our newest represented artist.
Traversing familiar hip-hop, downtempo, half-time and full-time D&B rhythms, this mix is an adventurous dive into the plethora of contemporary producers who push left-field, harmonious, and off-kilter music. Sonic servings include excellent selections from Culprate, Koan Sound, Ivy Lab, kLL sMTH, and a choice track from SmallPrint label-mate Kercha. Keep your ears perked and you might even hear the unreleased Primate track slithering around somewhere.
The relationship between jazz, soul, and intelligently designed synthesis are the staples of the Primate sound, and the mix he has provided explores the combination of these musical stylings. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, griff is quite the prolific musician. Most known for his original acoustic-driven composition, he is also a DJ and a talented guitar player who has performed throughout Australia and the US. His electronic compositions are often infused with his stringwork, a style he has become well known for. His music tends to lean on the downtempo to midtempo side of things, although he is versatile with pace as a producer and DJ - and this mix brilliantly showcases that.
We won’t reveal too much, as the mix speaks for itself, but it is an impeccable journey through an extensive range of styles and feels, each with a World music influence like much of griff's own productions.
In addition, griff is one half of Dersu Uzala, a side project he created with his brother. This mix features unreleased music from the pair. If you aren’t familiar with their music, please indulge. griff has been a long time favorite and an immense inspiration to us at The Rust Music. We couldn’t be more honored to share this with you.

Just in time for Spring we've got a brand new edition of Rusted Rhythms. Volume six of our mix series features an hour of smooth and savory tunes from MALAKAI. Predominantly featuring originals, with a few remixes and tracks from other artists, the mix is a colorful blend of chilled out head-nod music and glitch-infested exuberance. Perfect for a day in the sun, but somehow also well-suited for relaxing inside, escaping the rain. It's also just as comfortable as a dancefloor selection. The key component here is groove - the artist sews the seams of each song succinctly, and the head nod is consistent. That's something I know I look for in a mix. I've said enough - I'll let the mix do the talking.

Just over a year ago I had the pleasure of attending The Tsunami Bass Experience’s HzOfHorrors halloween show. Before that night, I hadn’t heard of Conscious Pilot, and I left talking about him.
Just over a year ago I had the pleasure of attending The Tsunami Bass Experience’s HzOfHorrors halloween show. I went with the intention of seeing Nomine & Sam Binga, two names I was already familiar - before that night, I hadn’t heard of Conscious Pilot. I was so excited for the first two, and I left talking about Conscious Pilot. His set was one of the most captivating and mesmerizingly heavy collection of tracks i’d experienced live before, and to top it all off, Tsunami Bass had installed a Bass floor contraption that quite literally shook you to the bone. You could quite literally feel the music. I left wanting more, and wound up interacting with CP online in an attempt to find out what songs i’d heard the night before. Now, one year later, I’m happy to announce that CP, aka Patrick Forster, has recorded a b2b mix with his buddy Fox for me to release through The Rust. It’s a collection of all unreleased, original tracks from both artists, and was recorded in Conscious Pilot’s home studio. It’s an hour worth of madness, and it illustrates so brilliantly why I enjoyed that show so much. Both artists find such an exceptional balance between the deep and the heavy. There’s some straight up bone-crunchers in there, but theres also a handful of smoother tunes to space out to. The mix is quite a magnificent ride, and i’m incredibly excited to share it with you. The mix premiered on Conscious Pilot’s sub.fm show, and is available to download here.
